Kalid Odweyne

Kalid Odweyne studied the MPharm at the Reading School of Pharmacy from 2013 to 2017, and added the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration to his qualification during summer study. He is currently a pre-registration pharmacist in the NHS.

Pharmacy appealed to Kalid because he is particularly interested in chemistry and biology, and he loves to interact with people so it was a great combination for him.

He made the decision to come to Reading after attending an Open Day and meeting the lecturers and students from the School of Pharmacy, and seeing the campus we have here.

"When I was applying, the MPharm at Reading was going through reaccreditation and my cohort was the first year on an integrated course. This means you don't learn the different aspects of the subject separately, but look at a particular disease and how you would use different medicines and how it links to the chemistry. Not many universities were doing that at the time. The lecturers were really friendly and excited about the teaching. Speaking to students at the Open Day, they were very happy and that made me want to apply."

Giving students the edge with placements

A key aspect of the MPharm at the University of Reading is the opportunity to gain direct experience within the healthcare industry through placements.

We have strong links with industry and work closely with healthcare organisations in the local area, giving our MPharm students the chance to try out their future career during their studies.

"The University was very good at arranging placements every year. Each placement used knowledge we'd learnt in that year of the course, so the placements were longer each year. In first year, I had an afternoon in a community pharmacy and a hospital. In second year, I had four day-long placements and in third year, week-long placements of my choice.

"Lecturers encouraged us to find placements ourselves as well and helped us find them. In fourth year I managed to go on five different placements. It's given me an edge, which I owe to the support from my academic tutor and pharmacy staff, and which I'm really grateful for."

Opening future career opportunities

Kalid undertook the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration during his MPharm. The Reading School of Pharmacy is unique in its ability to collaborate with the internationally recognised Henley Business School to offer this additional qualification. The Certificate in Business Administration has recently been redeveloped to ensure all MPharm students can benefit from the majority of the course content.

With the growing demand for leadership roles in the NHS, this opportunity helps our students stand out to potential employers.

"When it came up, it sounded really interesting. Pharmacy is moving away from modern-day dispensing and becoming more involved with management of a local area, commissioning, finance. The Certificate in Business Administration speaks to the current climate by teaching leadership and financing.

"Through the course, I'm able to be of more value in a pharmacy context. I'm able to do a clinical role and, with practice, look at management and leadership roles, which the NHS needs. The Certificate in Business Administration is very relevant to the current climate and will further my employment prospects - I'm not tied to one area of pharmacy."
