Discovering the MSc Environmental Pollution at Reading
While studying her undergraduate degree in BSc Agricultural and Environmental Science, Rachel Blissett-Lyne developed a particular interest in soil science and its "underrated" qualities.
“I love soil science because it breaks down biology, chemistry and physics in a subject I can grasp and understand well."
After graduating and deciding to further her knowledge through a master's course, Rachel came across the MSc Environmental Pollution at Reading and was impressed by a range of factors.
“I did my research and found that the University of Reading was highly regarded in soil science. Reading is also my hometown, so it felt right like a perfect choice.
"As well as this, Reading offered a good mix of modules incorporating air, water and soil into pollution. The expertise of the lecturers was also impressive."

“While studying the MSc Environmental Pollution my favourite module was Environmental Consultancy. This gave me a good idea of the industry and what to expect post-master's. I enjoyed the group collaboration aspect of the course providing valuable teamworking and time management skills!"
Students taking the MSc Environmental Pollution take part in a compulsory residential field class which helps provide real experience in the field and puts their theoretical knowledge into practice.
“A lot of my work now is field based and taking part in field trips on the course certainly helped me prepare me for a practical job and effective sampling.”
Rachel, in her role as an Environmental Scientist at RSK Raw, is today using the skills she picked up as a master's student at Reading.
“Using the Contaminated Land Exposure Assessment (CLEA) model and understanding and creating conceptual site models have probably been the most useful skills I have used since gaining employment.
"In addition I have been able to action the water and soil sampling skills gained, as well as report writing which I developed through my dissertation and coursework.”

Career in environmental science
Since completing her MSc Environmental Pollution at Reading, Rachel has picked up an exciting, progressive job.
“I now work as an Environmental Scientist for RSK Raw, who specialise in land-based oil spills around the UK. The job is very practical which is great because I love the outdoors, getting my hands dirty and meeting new people. There is also a good amount of reporting which I enjoy too.
"I hope to progress in my role for as long as I can and someday become a chartered environmental scientist. I would like to continue to learn and am thinking of taking some courses in ecotoxicology."
